Strong Tremors Shake India From Jammu-Kashmir To Sikkim, Afghanistan Also Hit

New Delhi: The midnight of 1 September was full of terror for the people. Earthquake tremors were felt one after another in many states from Afghanistan to India. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earth shook at 5 places between 1 am and 5 am. It is a matter of relief that there is no news of loss of life or property from anywhere, but people got scared due to the tremors that came in the middle of the night.

Earthquakes occurred thrice in one night in Afghanistan?

Three earthquakes were recorded in Afghanistan within a few hours. The first shock came at 1:06 pm. Its intensity was 4.4 and its centre was 132 kilometres below the ground. This shock was 101 kilometres south-east of Faizabad. After this, a second earthquake occurred at 3.14 pm. Its intensity was measured at 3.7 and depth was 127 kilometres. Its center was also near Faizabad. The third shock was felt at 3.31 pm. Its intensity was 4.2 and depth was 138 kilometres. Its center is said to be about 105 kilometres east of Kabul. People came out of their homes due to three consecutive shocks.

Was there an earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir also?

After Afghanistan, the earth shook in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, also. According to NCS, an earthquake of 2.4 magnitude occurred at 1:54 pm. Its depth was only 6 kilometres, which means it was very near the surface. Its center was 94 kilometres south-east of Pahalgam. There was no damage due to low intensity.

How strong was the earthquake in Sikkim?

An earthquake occurred in Mangan district of Sikkim at night. A tremor of 3.9 magnitude was felt at 1:48 pm. Its depth was 7 kilometres, and the center was 6 kilometres away from Lachung. Being a hilly area, there was some panic among the people. Apart from this, an earthquake of 2.9 magnitude was recorded at 5.38 am in Keyi Panyoor, Arunachal Pradesh.

Has there been any damage?

Till now there is no news of any major damage from all these earthquakes. But floods have already caused devastation in Nepal. Flash floods have caused huge damage in Nuwakot and Rasuwa. In such a situation, earthquake tremors have further increased the concern of the people. The administration has appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumours and remain alert.
